Hip hop rockers, Dos Leones released their latest EP “Cowboys from Space” this early April, 2020. Their ambitious and creative effort is packed with lots of high energy, psychedelic soundscapes and thumping drums and bass brought to you by Justin White (vocals, guitar, synth), Trey White (bass) and Caleb Villarruel (drums). In their first release as a three-piece band Dos Leones (formerly Two Lions) has found a cohesive but broad sound.

The opening track "King of the Forest" is a solid introduction to the styles you'll hear through the rest of the EP. The production sounds like something that came out of Danger Mouse's studio (Broken Bells, Gnarls Barkley). Dirty synth, low-fi vocals, thumping drum and bass and you can't go wrong with a spacey electronic outro. It definitely shows you where this trip is taking you.

"The Phantom" is a very dynamic track with an awesome Beastie Boys feel. Trey's dirty bass takes center stage here under Justin's sharp vocals scattered with some "Woo's!" to bring you that 90s hip hop nostalgia. The break down takes a sharp and unexpected turn into a brilliant slow downed groove.

The most guitar-driven track of the album “The Gun You Had” has an old school guitar hook with fast drums and displays Justin's singing range in a great way.

“The Message”, a song that seems to be their most popular track from online response has a chilled out vibe with a 90s west coast Sublime and hip hop feel. It’s reminiscent of songs like “It Was a Good Day” (Ice Cube) and “Regulate” (Warren G, Nate Dogg) with a groovy beat and tremolo keys while Justin hits you with “…are we gonna go on forever…” like a puff of smoke in your face. If you're into that sorta thing.

Their most rock-influenced song “No Where to Run” driven again by Trey's thick bass line and Caleb’s pounding drums is broken down by Justin’s synth sounds that take you on a final trip into outer space.

Overall a great album that will undoubtedly be a standout in the history of Laredo, TX music and will be appreciated by their fans and bring along many new ones.
